Character NAME: Cheria Barnes
Canon & MEDIUM: Tales of Graces (video game)
Canon PULL-POINT: Post-game, pre-epilogue. Just after defeating Lambda.
Character AGE: 18
Character ABILITIES: List of artes. Like almost any RPG character, Cheria has abilities she can use in battle, called Artes. Though she's advertised as the game's main healer, she's very well-rounded as a fighter in battle. The range of her artes is healing artes, buffing artes, offensive magic artes, general melee artes using throwing daggers, and these overpowered thing called mystic artes.
Character HISTORY: Tales of Graces wiki, Cheria's wiki
Before we get into Cheria’s backstory, let’s get some world building out of the way, since the wiki doesn't really cover it. To start off with, the world that Cheria comes from is not actually a planet, or at the very least it isn't a naturally made one. It’s a colony by the name of Ephinea, created by the scientists inhabiting the world Fodra. The people living on Ephinea don’t know this particular fact, because it’s been millenniums since the move and the history was mostly forgotten over time, except for what has been kept in the archives by the Amarcian race. The Amarcians are basically the direct descendants of the Fodran scientists that built Ephinea, and were entrusted with the history. Only one Amarcian has access to these archives, however, so most Amarcians don’t quite know story about Fodra. They only really know that there are Amarcian ruins scattered throughout the world.
The Fodrans built Ephinea when their own planet began to decay from exhausting Fodra’s core. Fodra’s core, which is a hyper-dense concentration of Eleth, was what sustained life and vegetation on their planet and what they used to power their technologies and, eventually, the genetic code they extracted to create a line of humanoids that would be used as their ultimate weapons. All of this extra use of the core exhausted the Eleth, and Fodra began to wither. This prompted the scientists to build Ephinea. They created an artificial core, which is important in that Ephinea’s core is not sentient like Fodra’s because of this fact. Fodra’s core is alive and teeming with Eleth, and it has a sort of “spirit” which you learn about in the epilogue of the game. This spirit manifests in the form of a woman by the name of Little Queen. Because the world was created from the outside in, the world is hollow with one entrance down into the core. This entrance is called the World’s Eye. It was largely unknown of because it did not belong to any of the three countries.
Now, because this is an artificial world, the Fodrans had to create an artificial way to regulate Eleth from the core, because the core isn’t able to do it consciously. And Eleth is, predictably, incredibly important because it is the source that sustains life in these worlds. These regulations mainly came in the form of three crystals placed on each of the continents. Eleth is both produced from the core and regulated by these crystals called the Valkines Cryas. These three obelisks control three separate elements of Eleth - Gloandi, which is found in the capital of Windor, controls wind Eleth; Duplemar, which is found in the captial of Strahta, controls water Eleth, and Forbrannir, which is located in the hollow of a mountain in the kindgom of Fendel, controls fire Eleth.
These crystals do not come without consequences, however. Forbrannir, the fire Cryas, has absorbed all of the heat from Fendel, leaving it a frozen tundra. Duplemar, the water Cryas, has absorbed the water Eleth from Strahta, leaving it a desert. Gloandi, the wind Cryas, is the only one that doesn’t seem to have as much of a negative effect, as it absorbs wind into it, leaving their lands calm while also pulling ships in and making their sea trade unmatched. This leaves the continent prosperous and coveted by Fendel and Strahta. There are also Cryas mines, which aren’t really touched upon quite as much as they should have been, but these are places to find concentrated forms of Eleth that can be used. It’s mentioned that Lhant’s Cryas mines are being tapped out. Also around Ephinea are places where Eleth seems to gather of its own accord. The most notable, and the only one you really get to visit and see is Lhant Hill, which is a cliff where seasonal flowers grow year round because of the concentration of Eleth in the ground/air.
The Amarcians/Fodrans, left “ruins” all around Ephinea. Though they’re less ruins and more what was left over before the Amarcians hid themselves up in the Amarcian Enclave in Fendel, effectively cutting themselves off from most of the rest of the world except to work alongside Fendel on Forbrannir. Their existence is basically forgotten over time, and their ruins built over. The Amarcians, however, when they went into hiding, took their advanced technology with them. And the only traces of it left anywhere else are in these ruins that were left behind and grown over. That’s basically all you need to know on the subject of the worlds and how jacked up they are!
So, the game actually starts out with getting to see the childhood of five of the main characters of the story. Cheria is one of the five characters alongside Asbel, Hubert, Sophie, and Richard.
Cheria’s a single child and the granddaughter of Frederic Barnes, who is in the service of the Lhant family. Frederic is her only living relative, as her parents passed away when she was very young. As a child, Cheria has a congenital disease. If she over exerts herself, she gets sick and weak. Because of this, she’s not able to do much, despite wanting to spend time with Asbel and Hubert. Frederic has instructed her not to bother Asbel and Hubert, both because Cheria is in service of the Lhant family and also because he doesn’t want her over-extending herself. Asbel and Hubert’s father, Aston, would come to her defense whenever she was scolded, and so she viewed him much like a father figure. She’s had a crush on Asbel since childhood, and this remains throughout the game.
In the prologue we see the awakening of Lambda and we see Sophie fight and presumably destroy him and herself in the process. When Sophie disappears, Asbel is convinced it's his fault that he couldn't protect her and leaves for the knight academy in Barona - the capitol of Windor, leaving Cheria alone in Lhant with her grandfather, as Hubert was adopted by the Oswell family. This is where the prologue ends and we move forward seven years. Cheria first appears in this part of the game when she shows up in Windor to let Asbel know that his father has passed away in battle and to alert him of the conflict between Lhant and Fendel. We learn that after Sophie disappeared and Asbel left, Cheria suddenly became well and more recently discovered that she had the power to heal. This gets us into the rest of the game.
Cheria is one of the main party members, joining the party very early on in the game and, for the most part, staying there. She is the party's healer and acts as the mother figure and chef for the group. Early on in the game, she creates and leads a relief organization made up of residents from Lhant to help care for anyone injured in battle. She's often the voice of reason and the person who supports the party through their personal hardships. Whether she's on the party or not, she's always helping out in towns where she can. In helping people constantly, she often overexerts herself extremely and ends up weak like she did as a child. As one of Richard's childhood friends, she too wants to help save him without having to hurt him. Once Lambda is finally sealed, Cheria dedicates herself to her relief organization full-time, and assists in getting the world back on it's feet after the destructing Lambda's presence caused.
Character PERSONALITY: Cheria is a woman of many traits, both positive and negative. First and foremost, Cheria is very much the "mother" of the group. She's shown making sure everyone is well-fed and eating healthy, and she doesn't pull any punches when it comes to spoiled behavior (usually involving Sophie, Asbel, or Pascal). She keeps the party and inventory organized, and generally makes sure everying is running as smoothly as it can. Not to say her efforts are without mishap, but she tries her hardest.
If Cheria can be the pillar of support for someone, she'll do so without hesitation. This doesn't just apply to the party either; Cheria is constantly helping others in need, even going so far as to lead a relief organization for that very purpose. She has no bias in who she helps - if a person is hurt, be that from Fendel, Strahta, or Windor, she'll take care of them. She believes that anyone hurt in battle or war should receive assistance, no matter what their alliance is. She's even seen healing a person that put her own life in danger.
And while Cheria is a caring and motherly individual, that definitely isn't all there is to her. As a child we see that Cheria is fiercely dependent on Asbel. However, as the game progresses, you see the false independence that she first presents to Asbel with in Barona turn into actual independence. At first, she's still pretty dependent on people, though she's good at hiding it for the most part. But as she grows and experiences the world more, she becomes the kind of person that you'd want to depend on, instead of being the one that depends on others.
When Cheria is presented with multiple chances to settle down and have a life where she can rely on someone else, she rejects it for her own goals, because she believes there are still people that need and want her help. By the end of the game, it's obvious that she cares more about her own expectations of herself than what her friends/acquaintances expect of her. It's not that she ceases caring about their opinions, it is simply that she's finally found her way - she's figured out the life she wants to live and the kind of person she wants to be, and she won't let anyone hold her back from it. She's of the mindset that she can settle down later, once she's helped the world get back to normalcy.
Now, while it may seem like Cheria's got everything figured out, she really doesn't. Cheria, despite having what she wants in life figured out, is a very self-conscious person when it concerns her image and many of her feelings. There are several skits where Cheria is shown being insecure about her weight, or how her hair looks, and she's even shown seeking validation when she gets a new accessory, and then getting upset when Asbel and Malik don't notice the difference. Cheria, like many (or most) people, has concerns about the way people perceive her, and also in the way she perceives herself. A lot of that self-doubt fades over the course of the game on an emotional level of validation, as she becomes comfortable with her own goals and ideals. However, there's a good chance she still worries about her physical appearance either way, since some of those moments where she worries over it are further in game.
It's also especially true when it comes to a lot of her feelings, especially her feelings for Asbel. While everyone else on the party (Asbel aside) knows how she feels about him, she reacts negatively almost every time it's brought up and denies it. It has a lot to do with her insecurities, since she isn't sure how Asbel feels for her due to lack of interest shown on his part. It doesn't make her care about him any less, because she's fiercely devoted to her childhood love. Rather than ruin the friendship they have, she keeps her feelings to herself (even if she's about as subtle as a brick to the face). Still, when it comes to people that she isn't able to infer their feelings, she second guesses how to act with them, and is rarely truthful about her feelings in those cases. Though, while Cheria sucks with her own feelings and Asbel's, she's actually pretty intuitive when it comes to other people, whether it involves their love lives, or if it's feelings in general that they're trying to hide. We see this when she speaks to Hubert about a gift his mother packs for him, eventually getting him to more or less admit he liked it.

First PERSON: I hope this is recording.
[Her voice drops to a quiet mutter.] I’m not very good at these things. Where is Pascal when I need her?
[She clears her throat again to speak louder.]
My name is Cheria Barnes. I suppose I was brought here to help on the relief side of war, so... If someone is in need of immediate assistance, I would be happy to help if I can.
Oh- um- if you’ve seen anyone by the names of Asbel, Hubert, Pascal, or Captain Malik, please let me know. Thank you!
[Her voice drops again and there’s the distinct sound of buttons being fiddled with.] Now how do I turn this silly thing off? This technology is so confusing!
[She doesn’t actually succeed in turning it off, and the next sound to come from the feed is the distinct noise of her communicator cracking against pavement and a startled cry from Cheria.]
Oh no, I thought these communicators were supposed to fly to someone else! Did I do something wrong?
Third PERSON: Cheria had never thought she’d be able to settle into a routine somewhere that wasn't home. Maybe it was just because for such a long time there was no routine back on Ephinea, and just when she had finally gotten the chance to settle into something, she’d been dumped here and asked to help in another war. Though she wagered that even if she were back on Ephinea, she still wouldn't be in Lhant. She’d wanted to travel the world with her relief cause, helping where she could with her healing. There had been so much suffering left in the wake of Lambda’s attack.
She chewed at her lip gently, flipping the omelette she was cooking. She hoped everyone was doing alright. Was Asbel taking proper care of himself, since Sophie wasn't there to keep an eye on him too? What if he simply couldn't handle the merge with Lambda? She tried not to fret about it as much these days, because there wasn't anything she could do about it without finding a way home. She’d searched tirelessly for some way out, but there were so many people here that had been stuck for years that she was starting to believe there simply wasn't an exit. She hoped her friends would show up someday too, but then she felt childish and selfish because they had things to do back there. Her relief organization would work tirelessly even without her there, and she had plenty of work to do here too. Lambda was no longer a threat back on Ephinea, and the wars had finally been put to rest. But here... They were still fighting a war, and she had a chance to help. She'd be going against everything she believed in if she just turned her back on the people in trouble here, just because they weren't from the same world as her. When it all came down to it, she had to help, and had been helping.
It hadn't taken her long at all to start up another relief organization here, made up of people who were less concerned with fighting and more concerned with helping those who couldn't help themselves. Taking care of people that were injured, being the pillar of support if someone needed it, even just doing food drives to make sure everyone had enough to eat, even if it came out of her own pocket. Helping people made her feel useful, made her feel needed, and most of all did something good for the community at large. She smiled wistfully, grabbing a dish from the cabinet to slide the rice omelette into. Another couple dozen and she should be ready to make her breakfast rounds. Maybe if she had some extra time and could get the funds together (difficult when she spent everything she received on helping the less fortunate), she could start a restaurant of some sort. Maybe one based on donations. A sort of pay however much you can afford kind of deal. It would still be helping people out, and she'd still be doing something she loved. Or maybe she could help out an orphanage... Well, she had plenty of time to make plans, since it didn't seem like she was going anywhere any time soon.
